Over my twenty years as a Global Corporate Executive in People and Talent Management, I have sat in hundreds of succession planning discussions. The same phrase comes up every time leaders talk about future-ready talent.

“He needs more presence.”
“She is strong, but her presence is not there yet.”
“They have the skill, but not the presence to lead.”

Presence has become one of the most critical leadership differentiators in today’s workplace. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many people still associate executive presence with charisma, height, confidence, or a polished speaking voice. That definition is outdated and belongs to a corporate era that no longer exists.
